International Migration in the Long-Run: Positive Selection, Negative Selection and Policy

چکیده
International Migration in the Long-Run: Positive Selection, Negative Selection and Policy Most labor scarce overseas countries moved decisively to restrict their immigration during the first third of the 20th century. This autarchic retreat from unrestricted and even publiclysubsidized immigration in the first global century before World War I to the quotas and bans introduced afterwards was the result of a combination of factors: public hostility towards new immigrants of lower quality, public assessment of the impact of those immigrants on a deteriorating labor market, political participation of those impacted, and, as a triggering mechanism, the sudden shocks to the labor market delivered by the 1890s depression, the Great War, postwar adjustment and the great depression. The paper documents the secular drift from very positive to much more negative immigrant selection which took place in the first global century after 1820 and in the second global century after 1950, and seeks explanations for it. It then explores the political economy of immigrant restriction in the past and seeks historical lessons for the present. JEL Classification: F22, J1, O1

Investigating the Asymmetric Relationship between Financial Instability, Monetary Policy and Economic Growth in Iran
This study investigated the asymmetric effects of financial instability shocks on economic growth and monetary policy shocks on financial instability in Iran. For this purpose, data 1991:3 to 2017:1 and nonlinear auto-regressive distributed lag (NARDL) approach has been used. For this purpose, three models have been estimated. In the first model, the asymmetric effects of fiscal instability shoc...
متن کاملThe Impact of Energy Consumption, Financial Development on Economic Growth, Based on Nonlinear and Asymmetric Approach
Investigating causal relations, symmetry and asymmetry leads to the correct understanding of policy makers for policy and planning purposes. Many studies have been conducted on the linear relationship between variables on the international level and in Iran, but these studies mainly focus on linear relationships. Since in Iran, the non-linear and asymmetric relationship between the energy consu...

متن کاملThe Survey of the Asymmetric Effects of Inflation's Positive and Negative Shocks on Inflation Uncertainty in Iran Through the Extending Ball Model (1992)
The purpose of current paper is to survey the asymmetric effects of inflation's positive and negative shocks on inflation uncertainty in short-run and long-run. For this end, first, the Ball model (1992) has been extended through the decomposition of inflation shocks to money demand's positive and negative shocks and money supply's positive and negative shocks. Then, through using nonlinear aut...
